November 8, 1898
The Kensington rune stone is discovered on Olof Ohman’s farm, near Alexandria. The stone tells of a group of Vikings who traveled to Minnesota in 1362, but its authenticity has long been the subject of debate.

A brief correction – by 1362 the Viking era was long past. The stone itself speaks of Goths and Norrmen, generally considered to mean Swedes and Norwegians (who shared a king in the mid 14th century). The idea of Vikings arriving in Minnesota 130 years before Columbus is the romantic conception of the inscription, but not the correct one.
