The Kensington rune stone is discovered on Olof Ohman’s farm, near Alexandria. The stone tells of a group of Vikings who traveled to Minnesota in 1362, but its authenticity has long been the subject of debate.

Thanks to Carver Scott Educational Cooperative-students in the Stepping Stones and Ascent Programs for the research on November’s Day in History.

Thanks also to Minnesota’s Learn and Serve America Service Learning Program for their help.

  1. A brief correction – by 1362 the Viking era was long past. The stone itself speaks of Goths and Norrmen, generally considered to mean Swedes and Norwegians (who shared a king in the mid 14th century). The idea of Vikings arriving in Minnesota 130 years before Columbus is the romantic conception of the inscription, but not the correct one.

    Michael,

Thanks for the update. It’s always great to hear from folks who know their history!
