The Battle of Sugar Point occurred on Leech Lake. The battle was between the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwa. After one of his soldiers went to pick up a bootlegger, he mistakenly fired his rifle. That is how the Battle began, off of that one shot. Then along came Bugonaygeshig or “Old Bug”, and then Marshal R.T. O’Connor arrested Old Bug. Chief Joseph (1840-1904) and his army were in the battle to. Six soldiers were killed in the ensuing battle. After that happened, Bugonaygeshig escaped from being arrested. After the battle was over, the Indians won the Battle of Sugar Point.
Today Leech Lake is a great place to fish and go on a vacation. It is located in Walker, Minnesota. It is also a Tourism Bureau and a new casino.
