In the Civil War, the Third Minnesota Regiment is involved in the capture of Little Rock, Arkansas. A painting of their entry into the city hangs in the governor’s office in the state’s capitol.

A tornado moves through Hennepin, Ramsey, and Washington Counties, killing nine. White Bear Lake is hardest hit. A tornado also sweeps from White Bear in Ramsey County into Wisconsin after passing through Hennepin and Washington Counties, causing nine deaths and $4 million in damages.

The Jesse James Gang raids Northfield’s First National Bank. Joseph Lee Heywood was killed for refusing to open the vault. One week later, the James Gang is caught after suffering from fatigue and wounds.

A tornado hits Minneapolis, New Brighton, and White Bear Lake, four deceased and fifty injured.

Doctors Floyd Lewis and C. Walton Lillehei perform the first hypothermic open, heart surgery, at the University Hospital in Minneapolis. During the procedure, the patient, a five,year,old girl, has her body temperature lowered to 79 degrees. She recovers, then she got to go home 11 days later.

A forest fire destroys Minnesota cities of Hinckley, Sandstone, Mission Creek, and Brook Park. One estimate is 413 deaths.

Approximately 160,000 acres of land burn. The smoke halts shipping on Lake Superior.
