At the Battle of Chickamauga in Georgia, the Second Minnesota is one of the few Union units on hand to repel a fierce Confederate attack. Casualties claim one, third of the regiment, with forty, five died, 103 wounded, and fourteen captured out of the 382 engaged in battle.

Macalester College opened its St. Paul campus. Originally known as Baldwin School, it was renamed for Charles Macalester, owner of the Winslow House, a hotel in Minneapolis where classes were first held. Macalester agreed to donate the hotel to the college in 1874.

The state of Minnesota and the Ojibwe living near Crow Wing signed a peace treaty. Negotiated to alleviate settlers’ fears that the Ojibwe would join in the U.S.–Dakota War, in truth the agreement was void because the state does not have the power to make treaties.

Newspaper editor Horace Greeley gave the principal address at a Hennepin County agricultural fair held in Minneapolis. In his speech he advocated federal and state regulations for the protection of farmers.

Duluth’s municipal airport was dedicated and a crowd of 15,000 attended the ceremony and air show.

The Little Sisters of the Poor established their convent in St. Paul. The Sisters began as a Hospitallers Order in Saint Servan, Brittany, France, dedicated to serving the elderly poor and infirm, and they maintain convents and hospitality houses all over the world.
