September 28, 1839

Early St. Paul resident Edward Phelan was arrested for the murder of his partner, Joe Hays. He would be acquitted, but his character was so unsavory that many considered him guilty. Hays’s was the first death and the first murder in the city’s history.

Thanks to Mrs. Judi Vittito’s 6th grade class at Northfield Middle School for the research on September’s Day in History.

Thanks also to Minnesota’s Learn and Serve America Service Learning Program for their help.
