Doctors Floyd Lewis and C. Walton Lillehei perform the first hypothermic open, heart surgery, at the University Hospital in Minneapolis. During the procedure, the patient, a five, year, old girl, has her body temperature lowered to 79 degrees. She recovers, then she got to go home 11 days later.

Thanks to Mrs. Judi Vittito’s 6th grade class at Northfield Middle School for the research on September’s Day in History.
Thanks also to Minnesota’s Learn and Serve America Service Learning Program for their help.
