The temperature hits -59 degrees at Leech Lake, a record low that stood until 1996, a week later the temperature increases 104 degrees to 45 degrees.

Forty-one-ore miners drown or were fatally buried in mud, and seven more escape by climbing a ladder. The Milford mine disaster happened North of Crosby on the Cuyuna Range in northern Minnesota when a nearby lake suddenly emptied into an underground mining operation. A county inspector, who had visited the mine the week before the accident, would later state that every precaution had been taken and that the flooding was unavoidable.

Sen. Williams Dean offers a resolution in the Minnesota Senate that the “Wild Lady-Slipper” or “Moccasin Flower” be named the state flower. The resolution was adopted in both houses. In 1902 a resolution changing it to the Pink and White Lady Slipper was adopted after it was found the Wild Lady Slipper did not grow in MN.
