February 27, 1868

Thomas Lowry is born in Logan County, Illinois on Feb 27th. After arriving in Minneapolis in 1868 Lowry would play an instrumental role in establishing the Twin Cities Streetcar system. He died in 1909.

Territorial delegate Henry M. Rice succeeds in lobbying congress to pass the enabling Act for the state of Minnesota. This act defines the state boundaries and authorizes the establishment of a state government.

Morrison and Sherburne Counties are created. Morrison is named for fur traders William and Allan Morrison. Sherburne, a justice in the territorial Supreme Court.

Minnesota is nicknamed the Gopher State the legislature had guaranteed a $5 million loan to rail road interest and a cartoon showing a railroad car striped rodents with human heads representing the people of the territory is printed on this date.

Watson’s Colored Chorus, an African American musical group with 250 singers. From Minneapolis and St. Paul gives a concert. The best reserved seats cost 50 cents.

Henderson, Minnesota is incorporated named after Founder Joseph. R. Brown’s aunt Margaret Brown Henderson and her son Andrew.
